Scenes from a Fourth of July

July 4th is not just any old holiday for my family. It is also my grandfather's birthday - this year he celebrated his 87th. So in addition to fireworks and barbecues (and croquet and bocce), we get to have cake and an enjoyable family reunion. Happy Birthday, Grandpa!

We're Going on a Berry Hunt!

Back at Beaver Lake (again!) yesterday, we picked some black raspberries and then had a special treat!

Looking for just the right berries.

The big brother always helps out the little brother.

Put 'em in the cup!

Smoosh the berries...

...and start churning that ice cream!

Getting a bit harder to turn now because...

...it's done!

A tasty reward for all of that hard work!

Beaver Lake, Part III

A few more from this past weekend - just pics of the boys this time.

Those eyes!

Super close-up!

Goodbye!

Beaver Lake, Part II

More pictures from our journey to Beaver Lake this past weekend.

Heading down another trail...

A dainty little flower.

Great texture. Can you see the scary face?

There are many trees like this one along the trails. One has to wonder if any of the love birds whose initials are carved in them are still together today. Was it worth the damage to the trees?

Beaver Lake, Part I

Yesterday was a beautiful day, so we took a trip up the road to one of my favorite places on earth - Beaver Lake Nature Center. Our family has logged countless hours on those trails - me with my 3-Day training, Grant in summer camp, and all of us on summer afternoon strolls like this one.

I've taken quite a few pictures along the trails of Beaver Lake (including one which won their annual photography competition in 2006), so this time I went with a specific photographic purpose in mind. Aside from the usual pics of the lake and, of course, the kids, I wanted to concentrate on finding small details and unusual textures. I found quite a few, and also got some nice shots of some really cute kids.

Heading off into the woods...

Don't eat the berries.

This is my favorite shot. It will make you dizzy if you look at it too long!

Does anyone know what kind of flutterby this is? Or is it a moth?

The lake.

Long grasses make cool textures.

I wouldn't recommend eating this either.
